Artist: The Codas
Single: Anomaly
From: Kingston
This is the first single from Braden Elliott (lead vocals, guitar), Angus Fay (drums), Mike McKitrick (keys), and Isaac Teague (bass).
In an interview with 91X this week, Elliott and Fay said that they grew up playing hockey together from age 8 to 12, then lost tough during high school. They ended being re-introduced to each other towards the end of high school, right before Elliot went to New Zealand to visit relatives. He then lived there for over two years, before coming back home and starting to collaborate with Fay in March of 2018.
“So a coda in a piece of music is an addition or an extension. That’s kind of the idea that we want for the band. I wanted to play with musicians that were all capable in their own right, that were good standalone musicians. I wanted the band to be addition or extension off of everyone’s individual artistry,” said Fay.
He explained how Mike McKitrick and Isaac Teague came on board,
Their new song was recorded at The Bathhouse Recording Studio and was released earlier this month,
“That one started with me writing on an acoustic guitar. It actually kind of happened extremely quickly. It was kind of a thirty-minute write to be honest. That just fell into my lap. I went to show Angus and I as like I’ve never actually sang the chorus I just have the words. Without my knowing he put a voice memo on, and I ended up singing it kind of how it is now and he was like Ok we got it, “said Elliot.
When asked about what new music is inspiring them now, Fay added,
“I’d say that at the moment there are no stand out artists. No artists that Braden and I are completely obsessed over. We’ve found a lot of common ground through songwriters like Ben Howard and Matt Corby, even like Kevin Parker from Tame Impala. Common interests in like Kendrick Lamar, even neo-soul artists like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu. Everybody in the band has a pretty wide range of musical influences.”
For Elliot, he said that he has been listening to R& B and hip hop lately. when they were writing this single and the EP they plan to release soon, they “were definitely heavily influenced by Matt Corby and Ben Howard styles.
Coming up Braden Elliot will be playing solo in Ottawa on October 4th, and the band will come back together for a show in Toronto on October 10.
“The shows that we have lined up now are to collaborate with friends to play music in other cities,” said Fay
Outside of the band, he lives in Kingston and works as a barista and guitar teacher, while Braden Elliot works with school groups as apart of his work at RKY camp outside of Kingston.
