We’re always so happy to find new bands in our region, so when Kiss the Fish contacted us we were excited to take a listen! So far they have released two EPs, “Alive and Well” and “Mile High Club.” The band consists of lead singer Sam Skolrood, rhythm guitarist Cory Scholtz, bassist Kelby Gutz, drummer Misko McGregor and lead guitarist Evan Khodier.
The band started at Queen’s University just about over two years ago. They originally got the idea for the band after they started going to a lot of bars and seeing shows in the area and thought they could perform just as well.
Earlier this week we talked to Hamilton native Evan Khodier, who is switched from studying history to music at Queen’s.
“Alive and Well we had actually did it in a really interesting way. We had a recording connection our in Barry’s Bay through our bassists Kelby. So we were using a recording engineer that he knew there and he was giving us a pretty good deal on it. So then we had that release cycle and it was all good. Then the Mile High Club- that was when we actually upped our game a little bit. Just got a little bit more sophisticated with recording equipment. [We] had a really talented sound engineer. I think you can really hear it in the recordings.”
He noted that they haven’t really started experimenting with software and stuff, so there is nothing digitally generated on the new ep.
“In Never Street you hear those trumpet sounds, and stuff like that. We actually had a sixth man, a trumpet player, but he actually moved to Calgary so he’s not with us anymore. That’s the most complicated we’ve gotten so far.”
Khodier, who opened for Long Range Hustle, earlier this month in Kingston said that the goal for the band right now is the make more music.
“Like in my mind, with Never Street -it is really a one of a kind feeling. I just want to chase that feeling more really. I just want to keep making more music that makes me feel happy, makes people happy.”
Kiss The Fish’s new single has just gone off the be mixed and mastered. He said that the plan is for it to be released next month.
When asked about what song in their catalogue captures Kiss The Fish’s sound, Khodier said,
“It’s that soft rock feeling in Never Street and April Rain. It’s a really good question, because our sound is not all over the board. We really go out of our way to try and encapsulate different sounds in our main sound that is us. At the end of the day I really love that feel. The feel of both of those songs. like Never Street and April Rain, and I love the blues stuff as well. I guess it would be that soft rock in combination with the blues, and I guess that is what we are at the end of the day.”
Right now they are looking for new musicians and considering where things are at without the trumpet player.
