Since most beaches are closed to the public, let’s go to one mentally. That was actually the intent of this song released by the Toronto band Martha & the Muffins four decades ago. Echo Beach is not a real beach, but rather a state of mind…somewhere you’d rather be than wherever you are now. (In 2011 Live Nation named their waterfront venue in Toronto Echo Beach in honour of the song). The tune became the band’s most successful hit, won the Juno for Single of the year in 1980; was named the 35th greatest Canadian song ever by the CBC; and more importantly, was song #7 on the 91X Top 91 Canadian Alt-rock songs of all time (counted down July 1st 2017).
A Throwback bonus!…NEW music from Martha and the Muffins. It’s actually a rework of a song they released in 1984 called Come Out and Dance. A COVID-inspired re-write by band mates and long-time writing collaborators Mark Gane and Martha Johnson resulted in “Stay Home and Dance”. Enjoy some fresh Muffins!
