This time dipping back to a band that formed in Burlington in 1979, largely made up of high school chums fronted by Gordon Deppe & Sandy Horn. They entered the scene as a kind of prog-rock band in the style of Genesis. Finding that wasn’t getting them too far, they switched their style to something they figured would be more bouncy and danceable. The name of the band purportedly happened when the members were eating alphabet soup pondering a name for the musical unit and got inspiration from the utensils they were using. Hench The Spoons.
When you think of new wave electro-beat music of the early to mid 80’s in Canada, the Spoons were certainly at the forefront (that bouncy and danceable concept worked).
They had a string of successful albums and hits throughout the 80’s. Taking a hiatus in 1990, they had a number of reunion gigs in the 90’s and into the 2000’s, with the band formally coming together again in 2010 for an album project. Their most recent album came out just last year called “New Day new World”. There were plans for a 40th anniversary tour this year. Guess that will have to wait for the 41st.
Let’s go back to the first song that got them on the radio…. From 1981, The Spoons with Nova Heart on Throwback Thursday. Remember, we have four hours of retro alt-rock every Sunday afternoon from 2 to 6…it’s Throwback Sunday.
