The provincial and federal governments will be contributing $1.2 million to assist the City of Quinte West as they look to expand their public transportation system, operated by Quinte Access.
MP Neil Ellis and MPP Todd Smith, joined Mayor Jim Harrison this morning inside Quinte West council chambers.
A total of $1.6 million will be going towards transit upgrades.
- Federal government investing $660,500.
- Ontario government contributing $550,400.
- City of Quinte West putting forward $440,00.
The funds will be used for two projects. The first will be for a feasibility study that will review and evaluate where Quinte West should go in the future with transit options. The second project comes in the form of a variety of upgrades to the system.
These new upgrades include:
- Purchase of four new buses and one paratransit vehicle
- Surveillance system upgrades on 21 buses.
- Six buses will have collision-avoidance software.
- Smart card system introduced, so riders can pay their fares easier and use the same system for Belleville transit.
- Maximum of six onboard bike racks.
“We are grateful for the financial support offered by the federal and provincial governments. This funding will help expand out public transit system and ensure residents have greater access to important services offered regionally, such as employment, education, and health,” said Mayor Harrison.
