Neil Young and Lindsey Buckingham are the latest artists to sell their songs.
Both have signed over a portion of their catalogue to Hipgnosis Song Fund.
The former member of Fleetwood Mac has reportedly sold the writes to 161 songs, including “The Chain” and “Go Your Own Way.”
The new deal also gives 50% of the publishing rights for any unreleased material.
In a bit of a twist, his former bandmate Stevie Nicks sold some of her publishing rights to a rival company called “Primary Wave.”
Here’s what Buckingham said in a statement about the deal.
“Prior to arriving at an agreement with Hipgnosis, I had wonderful long conversations with Merck Mercuriadis. I was pleased to find a kindred spirit, someone who’s a big fan of my work in Fleetwood Mac and an even bigger fan of my solo efforts. I look forward to working with Merck and the whole Hipgnosis team going into the future and am confident that my body of work will be curated with great heart and insight.”
Young also took a similar tone this week when announcing the sale of 50% of his catalogue, which is 1,180 songs.
Here’s what Mercuriadis said about the deal with Neil.
“I built Hipgnosis to be a company Neil would want to be a part of,” he said. “We have a common integrity, ethos and passion born out of a belief in music and these important songs. There will never be a ‘Burger of Gold’ but we will work together to make sure everyone gets to hear them on Neil’s terms.”
Is anyone really “Rockin’ in the free world?”
