Local business owner Tyler Allsopp has been officially sworn in as Belleville’s new city councillor.
The ceremony took place this morning at city hall.
Allsopp was the runner-up in the last election. He takes over the seat left behind by Patricia Culhane, who passed away suddenly in the fall.
He will take part in his first council meeting this afternoon at 4 pm. Residents can live stream the meeting on the city’s YouTube channel.
“Today is a very exciting day for me as I have been hoping and working for this since I was 20 years old. I felt that it was important to secure representation for young people in this community in order for our voices to become amplified and for our interests to be addressed. It is my hope that by having a young representative more people will start engaging in the process, sharing their ideas, and going about the hard work necessary to make our city a better and more inclusive place. There is a big learning curve but I am ready and I think Belleville is as well,” said Allsopp, as apart of a statement provided by the city.
Allsopp has been the co-owner of Doug’s Bicycle in Belleville since 2012. He also serves as the treasurer at the Enrichment Centre for Mental Health.
