Matt Mays kickstarts 2021 by unearthing a time capsule of sorts, a pre-COVID-19 concert film and digital/vinyl album that sees him re-evaluating his own catalog of music and taking his band on a retro trip through the past.
From Burnside With Love launched on Saturday, Feb. 13 starting at 9 p.m. AST at sonicconcerts.com, with the audio version available the same day as a digital album from Bandcamp and also a triple-vinyl LP. Filmed two winters ago on a soundstage in the heart of the Dartmouth industrial park, the session’s release is [erfectly timed for this musical absent when full-scale live shows and widespread touring is simply not possible.
Preceded by videos for Downtown and Tall Trees, the show’s set-up is reminiscent of the more dressed-up installments of MTV: Unplugged, although there are plenty of captivating electric moments.
It’s not a crazy fatiguing Matt Mays club or arena show, but it’s a perfect place to highlight the songs and the power of his band. Especially with longtime bassist Serge Samson, guitarist Adam Baldwin, keyboardist Leith Fleming-Smith and Damien Moynihan on drums.
