New COVID-19 cases are surging across Ontario, and that trend continues in the Quinte area.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health reported a total of 32 new COVID-19 cases today. That is the highest daily total that has been recorded since the start of the pandemic over a year ago.
Fifteen of the new cases are located in Belleville.
The region now has a record-high 71 active COVID-19 cases. The seven-day case rate per 100,000 people has jumped to 29.7.
Staff have also recorded another 10 more variants of concern, for a total of 20 voc’s since the start of the pandemic. One person is currently in hospital and one outbreak has been identified at a workplace in Trenton.
A total of 28,473 vaccines have been administered, with 1,946 people completed vaccinated. To date, HPEPH has identified a total of 514 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. Six people have died.
While we approach the Easter long weekend, Dr. Piotr Oglaza, the medical officer of health with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is encouraging residents to not gather with anyone outside of their immediate household.
Tighter restrictions were introduced by the health unit earlier this week in response to the growing number of cases. The measures include the pause on all short-term accommodations and only local residents can dine-in restaurants or book a haircut.
Local officials outside of the Quinte region are also urging all residents to keep to virtual celebrations for Easter.
Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington Public Health reported seven new cases of the virus today. There are now a total of 59 active COVID-19 cases.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported two new COVID-19 cases in Northumberland County today. That moves the county up to a total of 18 active cases.
Ontario has recorded over 2,000 new daily infections each day with Premier Ford hinting that an announcement could be coming tomorrow.
