The local school board here in Quinte has issued a statement this afternoon about what is expected to be a planned walkout tomorrow by CUPE members.
Hastings Prince Edward District School Board announced earlier today, that they would finalize a decision about schools and students by today.
Director of Education Katherine MacIver has issued a statement this afternoon about what to expect.
She say that if a strike occurs tomorrow, schools will be closed to students. School programs that usually happen before and after classes will also be cancelled during the job action.
Teachers will be contacting families about switching to asynchronous remote learning during the duration of the job action.
Here is the full statement from MacIver:
“Dear Families:
Schools closed to students Friday, November 4, 2022
Earlier this week we provided notice about the possibility of switching to asynchronous remote learning in the event of job action by education support workers of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
We have received confirmation that CUPE will go on strike starting tomorrow. As a result, all schools will be closed to students on Friday, November 4, 2022.
Tomorrow, teachers will be planning for student learning needs during the asynchronous remote learning period and will contact families who request alternative learning or support materials.
Before and after school programs hosted at HPEDSB schools and community use of schools permits are on pause during the job action. If your child attends daycare hosted in one of our schools, please contact the daycare provider directly.
High school students who are doing co-op education placements can continue going to their workplace if it is not at a school or school board office. If it is at one of those locations, the placement is on hold and alternative learning will be provided by the teacher.
If anything changes overnight, we will communicate prior to 6:30 AM tomorrow through the local media, the website HPEschools.ca and @HPEschools social media.
Thank you for your patience and support of our schools. Please be kind and patient with one another.”
As it stands this hour, the Ontario government has passed a bill that bans CUPE members from striking. The two sides currently have no deal. CUPE has previously announced that regardless of the bill, they are planning a walk out. OPSEU’s education members have also announced they will be walking off the job in solidarity with CUPE members.
