The federal government is investing over $30 million dollars to create a new long-term care home on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Local representatives joined Chief R. Don Maracle and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services for the announcement this morning at the Mohawk Community Centre.
The 128-bed Elder Care home will be a place for seniors in the community to receive around the clock care, while also maintaining their culture, language and community.
The federal government notes in a press release, that this will be the community’s first environmentally friendly long-term care building.
Construction on the building is expected to start in July.
