Iconic Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died. The Irish Times and the UK’s Daily Mail have reported she passed away today although few other details are know at present.
O’Connor had been battling mental health issues for years and had been very public about her struggles. 18 months ago, she lost her 17-year-old son to suicide. She had three other children.
Prominent on the music scene from the late 80’s into the 90’s, O’Connor scored a number one song in 1990 with “Nothing Compares 2 U”, a song written by Prince. She was known for her outspokenness on topics including politics, religion, sexuality and mental health. O’Connor caused major controversy in 1992 during an appearance on Saturday Night Live when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II as a protest again the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church.
She released 10 albums between 1987 and 2014.
