April 1st, 2024, will officially mark 100 years for the Royal Canadian Air Force, and 95 years of a Canadian Forces Base being in Trenton. From delivering supplies to the high Arctic, to airlifting troops, equipment, and humanitarian loads worldwide, 8 Wing/CFB Trenton is the hub of Royal Canadian Air Force air mobility operations in Canada.
In 1959, the R.C.A.F Golden Hawks Aerobatics Team hit the sky and Trenton housed this team a year later. For the 2023-24 hockey season, the Trenton Golden Hawks Jr. A Hockey Club will be honouring the Golden Hawks, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the military history of Trenton/Quinte West. The team will wear blue and white jerseys, pant shells and socks for the season.
“We could not be prouder,” says Head Coach and General Manager Derek Smith. “Growing up in this region, I can remember seeing planes landing and taking off, and military members training. It is something I never take for granted. It is always a thrill seeing our new players, looking up to the sky. They see the size of the Globemaster, or the noise of a fighter jet or the beauty of a Snowbird, coming in for a landing right over the rink. It is incredible.”
The Golden Hawk’s season kicks off tonight with a home-opener against the Coburg Cougars. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. at the Duncan Memorial Gardens, located in Centennial Park in Trenton. Just outside the arena you will see a “Golden Hawk” F-86 Sabre aircraft, which serves as a reminder of the history of not only that team, but the squadron and air force it gets its name from.
Tickets can be purchased at the Golden Hawks Website or at the box office.
