The National Day For Truth and Reconciliation is Saturday, September 30th.
The City of Belleville has released details today about a ceremony that will take place on the day.
The community event will start at 10 a.m. at the Lions Pavilion in West Zwick’s Park. Visitors are encouraged to wear orange shirts.
Guest speakers:
- Chief R. Don Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte
- Author and energy healer Tara White
- Former professional hockey player Norm Maracle
- Fire keeper Greg Loft
Staff have announced that Bonnie Jane Maracle will be talking to the audience about the history behind the Tyendinaga Longhouse.
“Sept. 30 is a day for education and reflection. It is a day for us all to learn more about the ongoing legacy of the residential school system and to commemorate the truth of the history from First Nations, Métis and Inuit knowledge keepers. It is also an opportunity to build relationships. I would like to encourage all residents to join us at West Zwick’s Park to listen, learn and reflect on the stories and history shared during this day of Truth and Reconciliation,” said Belleville Councillor Sean Kelly in a statement. Kelly is the Chair of the City’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
The City will be lighting some landmarks in orange on September 30th, including Belleville Fire Station 1 Memorial Garden, Bridge Street Bridge and the Belleville sign. The flag at Belleville City Hall will be lowered.
