The St. Alban’s Centre in Aldophustown has released the following statement today.
Community Forum at St. Alban’s Centre gives voice to citizens in Ward One
Mayor, Deputy-Mayor and Councillor meet with constituents Sept. 26th
Local citizens have an opportunity to meet with and question their local elected Town of Greater Napanee representatives at St. Alban’s Centre on the night of Thursday, September 26th. This forum represents one of the community goals and roles of Adolphustown’s St. Alban’s Centre.
“We work to serve the community in a variety of ways,” said Dan Coghlan, Chair of Friends of St. Alban’s Adolphustown (FOSAA). “We’re a Registered Canadian Charity, we host a range of community groups regularly and welcome Loyalist Parkway bicyclists with our 24/7 repair station. We sell coffee and used books to raise funds to repair and maintain our historic Church and Rectory buildings. We hold concerts and other public events every year, and we also believe it’s important to give citizens the opportunity to hear and interact with their municipal voices and decision-makers in both election and non-election years.”
The Community Forum on September 26th will run from 7 to 9 p.m. with Ward One Councillor Michael Schenk, Mayor Terry Richardson and Deputy-Mayor Brian Calver having confirmed their attendance. Each will make an opening statement and then be offered questions submitted to the group’s website as well as directly from the night’s attendees.
Questions are expected to be wide-ranging, covering everything from taxation to homelessness and services provided by the town, such as garbage pick-up, the future of recycling, and the rising costs of policing.
“We’re hoping for a representative crowd at the forum,” said Coghlan. “We’re working hard to ensure it’s as good as possible by having microphones in the audience, and we’re also expecting a robust supply of submitted questions to our website at StAlbansCentre.ca From talking to neighbours and local volunteers, I expect a wide range of serious questions.”
Adolphustown was the site of the first town hall meeting held in Upper Canada, in 1792, a year after the Colony of Quebec was divided into Upper and Lower Canada. St Alban’s Centre is located at 10419 Loyalist Parkway (Hwy 33) in Adolphustown, now the cornerstone of Greater Napanee. Friends of St. Alban’s was formed by local volunteers to preserve as a community hub the former St. Alban’s Church, built originally as a tribute to Loyalists 100 years after their arrival. ‘Friends’ is an open group, with new members always welcome.
St. Alban’s Centre recognizes and celebrates the achievements of the local pioneers who helped create and shape Canada’s largest province, and the country itself.
