The OPP have released the following statement this morning.
Members of the Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind everyone to use caution and do their research when committing to home improvement contracts.
Sales scams can happen to anyone and can often be quite believable. If you receive an unsolicited phone call, door-to-door visits, or email, please remain vigilant. Police have received several reports of unapproved third parties making unsolicited contact with homeowners regarding a Canada Greener Homes Grant or rebates similar in nature.
The Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada and its family of brands will never solicit over the telephone, by email or go door-to-door asking to inspect or sell heating and cooling products. Home energy evaluations are performed by licensed service organizations at the request of the homeowners.
Unfortunately, scammers are very tricky and can adapt their approach, so people of all ages fall victim to their schemes.
Following these tips to avoid falling victim to similar scams:
- Refuse any in-home inspection from a door-to-door salesperson
- Never sign anything
- Do your research and double-check everything
- Avoid giving out personal information, online, over the phone or in person
- Report suspected scams
