Belleville Council dealt with a packed agenda during their regular scheduled meeting yesterday.
Here are some highlights from the meeting:
Noise Bylaws:
Belleville Council has signed off on raising fines for people who violate the noise by-laws. Fines are now set at $250 a piece, for issues surrounding excessive music, loud power tools and vehicle engines. The top fine is now at $500 for obstructing an officer. Belleville’s manager of by-law enforcement told council that in the last five years, money from the fines has not been used towards covering expenses and educating the community on by-laws, as originally intended.
Electric vehicle charging stations:
Councillor Margaret Seu asked the city back in January to look into adding more electric vehicle charging stations. She had pitched that chargers should be added to the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre, local municipal parks, court house parking lots, the library and near City Hall. Belleville staff conducted a feasibility study to look at some of the options. Staff had been looking at possibly proceeding with charges at Meyers Pier, the City Hall parking lot in downtown, and Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre. Flash forward to the meeting last night, Seu’s motion to consider adding charging stations into the 2026 budget failed by one vote.
Summer Festivals:
Belleville Council has signed off on the Caribbean Festival and Ribfest. Fees and noise permits were waived for the events. The Belleville Caribbean Festival will take place on Friday, August 15th at Victoria Park. The event will continue on Saturday, August 16th in downtown Belleville and West Zwick’s Park. We also learned that Belleville Ribfest will be returning after a few years off. Ribfest will take place from Friday, August 15th to Sunday, August 17th at West Zwick’s Park.
