Affordable housing continues to be a key topic at Quinte West Council meetings.
A team of agencies and local residents have pitched the ideal to Council of building two affordable apartment buildings in Trenton. The proposed site is on the old College Street School, where there is close to 3-acres of land. The area is already owned by Quinte West, and would still need zoning, funding and other approvals. Work could start next year.
Council approved the pitch last night during their meeting.
Four local resident groups are behind the plan with the All-Together Affordable Housing Corporation, Connect Quinte Affordable Housing Corporation, Springale Development Inc, and NOW Development Group.
The two apartment buildings would have 42-units each. One building would only be for seniors. The site would be called George Street Village.
Rent would be set at least 20% below the average rate, in order to be considered an affordable housing project.
A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 5th at 4:30 p.m. at the Quinte West Council Chambers in Trenton.
