The first ‘Toy Story’ movie came out 25 years ago today, feel old yet?
Pixar’s Toy Story was so groundbreaking when it was released in 1995. It was the first feature-length computer-animated movie released theatrically. On the 22nd of November, 1995, Sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head and Bo Peep came alive on cinema screens for the first time.
The original Woody was a ventriloquist’s dummy. Executives at Disney, (which co-produced Toy Story at that time), requested that Woody be changed to something else. Disney felt that ventriloquist’s dummies were usually associated with horror movies, and they didn’t want their cute kids’ movie to be terrifying, that was until Disney bough Pixar before making Toy Story 4.
Hasbro and Mattel both turned down the toy license for the Toy Story franchise, believing that they wouldn’t have enough time to put a toy line together in the 11 months they had before the film came out. Luckily a Canada-based company Thinkway Toys got the license instead and created Woody and Buzz toys.
