It has been another day full of key updates, as Ontario continues to deal with the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
Here is your local recap:
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health recorded 35 new COVID-19 cases and ten more recoveries. There are a total of 255 active COVID-19 cases. Health care workers are treating 10 local patients in hospital, with seven in the ICU. The number of COVID-19 outbreaks has dipped down to 18.
The local health until will be implementing a Class Order and Letter of Instruction as of Friday. The enhanced measures comes as the concern around Omicron continues.
Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington continues to be the top hot spot in Ontario. The local health unit reported 216 new COVID-19 cases today, for a total of 1,186 active cases. There are 28 people in hospital with 13 in the ICU. New measures are coming in the area, similar to Quinte.
The case load per 100,00 people in the last seven days is up 426.
Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College have shifted exams to alternative delivery.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported 10 new COVID-19 cases today across the district. Six of those cases are located in Northumberland County. The district has a total of 59 active COVID-19 cases, with 21 in Northumberland.
Dr. Natalie Bocking, the local medical officer of health, believes that one case in Northumberland County is “highly likely” to be the Omicron variant.
“The confirmation that the Omicron variant has been detected in our area is not unexpected given we have seen cases in our neighbouring health unit areas. While we do not want people to panic, we do want to highlight the continued need for everyone to be vigilant in following public health measures to help protect themselves and their families from the spread of the virus,” said Bocking.
The COVID-19 outbreak at Campbellford Memorial Hospital has been declared over. The outbreak was first declared on November 24 and impacted roughly nine people.
The province has announced today that all adults 18 and older will be able to get a COVID-19 booster shot as of Monday. The interval from the second dose to third dose has also been condensed to three months.
Ontario reported 1,808 new COVID-19 cases today, the highest daily total in over six months.
The federal government is asking people to avoid non-essential international travel.
