Remembrance Day is upon us again this year, taking place this Saturday! The national day of remembrance has played an important role in Canadian society since World War 2, and ceremonies are taking place this year in nearly every community in the Quinte West region! A full list of ceremonies is available below!
Belleville
The Belleville Veterans Council will be holding a Remembrance Day Ceremony starting at 11 a.m. at the Belleville Cenotaph on Station Street. Attendees are asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m. As well, within Belleville during the day, the City of Belleville has announced service changes on Saturday because of Remembrance Day. Firstly, the Glanmore National Historic Site will be closed and there will be no recreation or pool programs at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre, but the centre’s Customer Service Desk will be open along with the FDC Track. As well, Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County will be closed this Saturday and Monday, but the Leaf and Yard Waste Depot will be open for regular hours on those days.
City Hall will be closed on Monday, while city and mobility transit will operate as scheduled on Monday, and there are no changes affecting the collecting of curbside garbage, green bin, or recycling bulky items or batteries
Brighton
There will be a candlelight parade and ceremony at the Cenotaph on Friday, November 10. The parade gathers at the Brighton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 100 at 25 Park Street at 6:45 p.m. then walking as a group to illuminate the Cenotaph with memorial
candles.
Saturday, Nov. 11, the parade from the Legion to the Cenotaph will begin at 10:30 a.m. A service will follow at 11 a.m., with the laying of the wreaths and a ceremony. Followed by drinks and snacks at the Legion.
Campbellford
A candlelight vigil leaves Campbellford Legion Br. 103 on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Candles may be purchased at the bar for $10. Walk to the cenotaph and place the candles. After a short ceremony, everyone is invited to return to the legion for light refreshments.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, the service at the cenotaph begins at 11:00 a.m. followed by light refreshments at Legion. People are encouraged to arrive by 10:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome. Remembrance Day dinner will be held at 6 p.m. at the Legion, held in honour of our veterans. Tickets are $26.
Consecon
The Remembrance Day service starts at 10:45 a.m., on Nov. 11 at the Consecon Cenotaph next to the Consecon Royal Canadian Legion Branch 509 at 184 County Road 29. A reception will follow inside the Legion with food, beverage and comradery.
Corbyville
There will be a Remembrance Day Service held at Elmwood Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
Deseronto
There will be a gathering at the Earle J Brant Memorial Legion Branch 280 at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11 with a small parade at 10:50 a.m. to the Cenotaph on Main Street. Following an 11 a.m. service, there will be a reception with lunch, refreshments and member awards at the legion following the service.
Ivanhoe
The Remembrance Day Service is Saturday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m.. at the Cenotaph 11379 Hwy 62 in Ivanhoe. There will be lunch after at the Veteran Hall.
Madoc
The parade will start at the Madoc Royal Canadian Legion Branch 363 at 10:30 a.m. with the Remembrance Day service taking place at the Madoc Cenotaph at 155 St. Lawrence St. E, at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Followed by refreshments and a light lunch at the Legion at 33 St Lawrence Street East.
Picton
There will be a Remembrance Day service at the Picton War Memorial/Cenotaph at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The formation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Following the service, there will be lunch and entertainment at the Picton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 078 at 21 Elks Street. The United Church will have a Remembrance Day display. The church will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Traffic note: The streets will be closed around the cenotaph for the Remembrance Day ceremony.
Quinte West
The Trenton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 will host a candlelight service on the evening of November 10 at the Trenton Cenotaph, located at the intersection of Quinte Street and Fraser Park Drive. Everyone is invited to meet in the Trenton Legion Parking Lot at 19 Quinte St at 6:30 p.m. for the Candlelight Vigil to be held at the Cenotaph at 7 p.m. Vigil Kits are available at the Legion for $4 with proceeds to be donated to local veteran initiatives. The kits can be purchased and picked up early at the Trenton Legion office to allow time for decoration.
The Remembrance Day Service will take place at the Trenton Cenotaph on Nov. 11 with form up at 10:30 a.m. in the Legion Parking lot. Roads will be closed around the cenotaph. Organizers are expecting a large turnout again this year so they encourage the public to arrive by 10:15 a.m.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 387 also hosts a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at the Frankford Cenotaph, located at 36 Mill Street at 11 a.m. After the ceremony, follow the Colour Party back to the legion for lunch. Everyone is welcome! No admission.
Stirling
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 228 is holding a Remembrance Church Service on Nov. 11 at the Harold Cenotaph at 4285 Stirling Marmora Road starting at 10:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come back to Stirling Legion for a social and lunch.
The roadway will be closed around the cenotaph. A bus will take ceremony attendees from the legion to go to the Cenotaph. If anyone would like to take the bus they can sign up at the Legion at 2430 Stirling Marmora Road.
Tweed
Meet at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 428 on Nov. 11 at 10:40 a.m. for a parade to the Cenotaph at Tweed Memorial Park. Military representatives will also be in attendance. Organizers are eager to welcome 25 soldiers from 1 RCR at CFB Petawawa and 25 Airmen from 436 Squadron at CFB Trenton. The ceremony begins at 10:58 a.m. with the laying of the wreaths. Afterward, there will be a light lunch at the legion at 210 Victoria Street N. with dignitaries, veterans, legion members and soldiers.
Tyendinaga
The public is invited to the Township of Tyendinaga Municipal Office at 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 11 for a brief Remembrance Day Ceremony at 859 Melrose Road in Shannonville. (If you require seating, please bring your own chair.)
Warkworth
Warkworth Royal Canadian Legion Branch 380 is hosting a Remembrance Day ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 10:45 at the Cenotaph, in downtown Warkworth.
Wellington
There will be a church service at 10:30 a.m. at the Wellington United Church. Following the service, at 10:45 a.m. a parade will proceed to the Wellington Cenotaph in Wellington Park, with the service starting at 11 a.m. with the laying of wreaths. Afterward, there will be a light lunch and refreshments back at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 160 at 364 Main Street.
