Quinte West has released the following statement this morning.
The City of Quinte West has applied for the Government of Canada’s second round of Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) funding.
The HAF is a Federal Government initiative to remove barriers and support the development of affordable, inclusive, equitable, and climate-resilient communities. The City had previously applied to the first intake of the Housing Accelerator Fund in August 2023, but was unsuccessful. Housing Accelerator Fund Round 2 applicants must have previously submitted a funding application that was declined in order to be considered for this next round of funding.
The City’s Housing Action Plan outlines seven initiatives that align with the fund’s application criteria and will help increase the affordable housing supply in Quinte West. The plan includes a program to sell municipal lands for affordable housing projects, providing financial incentives to homeowners who create accessory dwelling units in their existing homes, and launching a new online permitting program for building permits and planning applications.
“The housing initiatives outlined in the City’s Housing Accelerator Fund’s Round 2 application align with the City of Quinte West’s Strategic Plan by promoting affordable housing development,” says Brian Jardine, Director of Planning and Development. “Support from the Housing Accelerator Fund will enable the City to accelerate the implementation of its housing initiatives over the next three years.”
On Aug. 14, Quinte West Council approved staff to apply for the second round of funding. The City’s latest HAF application was submitted on Sept. 13, 2024, and the City expects to hear back later this year about whether funding will be granted.
The City’s HAF application was submitted under the fund’s ‘Large/Urban’ application stream for municipalities with a population greater than 10,000. The Housing Accelerator Fund Round 2 will invest $400 million to grow the annual housing supply in Canada’s cities annually, creating a target of 12,000 new homes between 2025 and 2027.
