Prince Edward County is once again shining the spotlight on the state of County Road 49.
The condition of the concrete road has been a sticking point for many. County staff add in a statement today that in 1998, the province passed over the responsibility to the municipality. It has been named one of the worst roads in the province by CAA.
“We have met with ministerial staff in Ottawa and our local Member of Parliament to stress the importance of this project. Now, they need to hear directly from the residents, business owners, and visitors who are impacted by the poor quality of this road every day,” said Mayor Steve Ferguson, in a statement.
Officials are encouraging people to share their views about the road on the online platform, Have Your Say. The overall views will be shared to the federal government.
Mayor Ferguson continues to call on the government to help improve the road. The Ontario government set aside close to $20 million dollars earlier this year, from the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Fund, to the County Road 49 fund. Prince Edward County Council signed off on using $7.8 million dollars from the 2024 budget to go towards County Road 49.
