Officials are reporting several multi-vehicle collisions on Highway 401 this morning between Belleville and Trenton.
Calls first came in just after 8 a.m. about traffic issues.
Police have confirmed that Highway 401 between Belleville and Trenton is closed in both directions. Drivers stuck on the road, are encouraged to remain in their vehicles. OPP officers are trying to get vehicles turned around and off the road safely.
As for the overall closures, vehicles are not being allowed on Highway 401 Westbound at Wallbridge-Loyalist Road. Vehicles are being blocked heading onto Highway 401 Eastbound, at Glen Miller Road in Trenton.
Officials are encouraging drivers to use alternate routes and except significant delays.
Quinte West OPP have confirmed that at least 50 vehicles were involved in the collisions.
*Noon Update – Stranded drivers on the highway have been bused out to the Duncan MacDonald Memorial Arena in Trenton, which is acting as a warming centre. Full closure remains in place.
*Afternoon Update – The OPP have confirmed that the crash near Glen Miller Road resulted in 17 vehicles involved. Three to four people went to hospital with injuries, but there were no fatalities or serious injuries a result. Highway 401 Westbound between Belleville and Brighton has opened. Highway 401 Westbound remains closed as of 4 p.m.
