Staff with the Belleville Public Library have released the following statement this week about a new program.
Belleville Public Library is pleased to announce a new collection of Bird Watching Kits, free to borrow with a valid library card, along with a special event celebrating World Migratory Bird Day on October 10th.
The Bay of Quinte Bird Team has generously provided these kits for patrons of Belleville Public Library and have also made them available at the Tweed Public Library and Stirling-Rawdon Public Library.
Available to borrow for one week with a Belleville Public Library card, Bird Watching Kits make it easy for community members of all ages to explore Belleville and the Bay of Quinte region’s diverse birdlife. Each kit includes a backpack, adult- and child-sized binoculars, a field guide, a Quinte Conservation parking pass, trail maps, and a variety of bird identification resources.
The creation of the Bird Watching Kits was made possible through the support and collaboration of the Bay of Quinte Bird Team, Bird Friendly Belleville, Wild Birds Unlimited Belleville, Quinte Field Naturalists, Trailhead Belleville, Ontario Nature, Quinte Conservation, and Creator’s Garden.
The new collection will be celebrated on Saturday, October 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Belleville Public Library as part of the World Migratory Bird Day celebration. The Bay of Quinte Bird Team will introduce the 10 nominees for Belleville’s City Bird, with community members invited to cast their vote for their favourite either in person or online. Attendees can also learn more about migratory birds found throughout the region and get an introduction to the new Bird Watching Kits.
Kawartha Bird Control will also be on hand with a bird of prey, along with information about bird-safe solutions, conservation, and ethical wildlife management.
The event will begin with a 30-minute presentation, followed by an interactive, drop-in morning featuring activities and opportunities to learn more about local birds. The event is free and open to bird enthusiasts and curious community members of all ages.
