Belleville City Councillor Pat Culhane has died.
The city said in a statement, that she passed away Sunday evening, surrounded by family at Belleville General Hospital.
Culhane dedicated her life to helping others. She was a pediatric and emergency nurse, and later a supervisor at Belleville General Hospital.
“The City of Belleville has lost a passionate advocate for our City and a defender of all our citizens – especially those who she considered the most vulnerable. Pat always took the view that her seat at the Council table gave her an opportunity to be a voice for her community and she was determined to exercise it. Whether you agreed with her or not — we always knew where she stood and she was able to articulate her position clearly and effectively. We have lost an important member of our Council and we will feel this loss for many years to come,” said Mayor Mitch Panciuk.
Culhane was first elected to council in 2006, and later ran for mayor in 2014. She was a nurse in the Arctic for four years, before returning to council in 2018.
Culhane served on several committees and was a passionate advocate for all residents – but particularly the most vulnerable.
Flags around Belleville have been lowered to half-mast. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Sad to hear about the passing of Councillor Pat Culhane a dedicated nurse and later @BellevilleON Councillor. Pat dedicated her life to the care and advocacy of citizens and, in particular, the most vulnerable. She will be missed. Thank you Pat, Rest In Peace
