The Conservative Party of Canada has announced tonight that they are in the process of removing the Hastings, Lennox and Addington MP Derek Sloan from the caucus.
The leader of the party, Erin O’Toole, issued the following statement.
“Derek Sloan’s acceptance of a donation from a well-known white supremacist is far worse than a gross error of judgement or failure of due diligence. In accordance with the Reform Act, I have initiated the process to remove Mr. Sloan from the Conservative Party of Canada caucus. I expect this to be done as quickly as possible. Moreover, as Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, I will not allow Mr. Sloan to run as a candidate of our party. Racism is a disease of the soul, repugnant to our core values. It has no place in our country. It has no place in the Conservative Party of Canada. I won’t tolerate it.”
Sloan has issued the following statement on Twitter.
The Conservative Party is scheduled to meet for a virtual retreat on Friday before Parliament resumes on January 25. According to reports, the 2014 Reform Act states that a majority vote is needed to remove an MP.
Here is the article from Press Progress, that broke the story.
