The City of Belleville is embracing its role as a Bee City.
Belleville’s Green Task Force will be holding a Pollinator Event in Market Square today.
The event from 9:30 a.m. to noon will coincide with the Belleville Farmer’s Market.
The Green Task Force will have a number of guest speakers raising awareness about the importance of helping bees and other pollinators flourish in the area.
The guest speaker that have been lined up include gardening expert Carson Arthur, and representatives from the Quinte Field Naturalists Association and David Suzuki Foundation.
There will be some plant and wildflower giveaways and crafts for the kids. The event will help to kick off Pollinator Week which is from June 20 to June 26.
“The goal of this event is to educate the public on the importance of pollinators, while also engaging residents in green initiatives and promoting healthy living with nature. When Belleville was declared a ‘Bee City’, we committed to building on our efforts in pollinator protection. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, bats and birds are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. Without them, we would not be able to sustain our food supply. We hope all residents will join us during Pollinator Week in celebrating these incredible creatures and acknowledging the important role they play in our everyday life,” said Green Task Force Chair and City Councillor Chris Malette, in a statement.
