91X has been playing indigenous music throughout the day, in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
We remain committed to continuing to listen, helping to provide a platform to educate, and raising awareness as we all move forward towards healing together.
Here’s what we’ve been playing today!
Chubby Cree – Rock Your World
- This is the first studio single from Noah Green and his grandmother Carol. The Edmonton-based group has gone viral on TikTok.
DJ Shub – Calling All Dancers
- He won a JUNO Award this year in the top “Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group” category.
- This is from his album, “War Club.”
Jayli Wolf – Child of the Government (Stripped Down)
- The Toronto artist has released an acoustic version of some of the songs from the 2019 EP, “Wild Whisper.”
- The song tells the story of Jayli’s family and their experience during the Sixties Scoop. Jayli’s father was one of the children taken away.
Miesha and The Spanks – Dig Me Out
- Miesha Louie grew up in East Kootenay and later on started this punk rock band with drummer Sean Hamilton about six years ago.
- Here is Miesha’s full statement about this song: “Last year the remains of 215 children were found at the site of the old T’kemlups Residential School. When the news came out it was everywhere fast. A lot of people in Canada didn’t know about Residential Schools because it wasn’t taught in our schools, or at least, not the truth. I remember sitting in class when they briefly came up in social studies, saying that they taught kids how to speak English, read, write, basically helped them adjust to modern society. Like most Indigenous kids I already knew the history of abuse that came with the assimilation these schools offered, designed to “kill the Indian,” where it often succeeded. I saw it first hand reflected in the generational suffering of my family. My Grandmother survived T’kemlups Residential School, sent there after her two older sisters died at St. Eugenes, the one closer to our home. Unlike her sisters, she made it back home, shamed and pregnant. T’kemlups was only the beginning, as more and more school sites began searching the grounds for more undocumented and unmarked graves. The numbers piled in from all across Canada, gaining more press and social media attention, until everywhere I looked, this is what I saw. Survivors and their relatives shared their stories, again, because they’ve been doing this for years while no one listened, and I read them all. I found myself in a very dark place, absorbed in my Grandmother’s story and so many like her, and it was very difficult to dig myself out. I wrote this song to process everything I was feeling: the grief, the horror, the anger, and the helplessness.”
Kaeley Jade – Ego
- We’re so grateful that Kaeley reached out to us recently. This is her latest single as she gets ready to promote a new album.
OMBIIGIZI – Cherry Coke
- Daniel Monkman (Zoon) and Adam Sturgeon (Status/Non-Status) front the project.
- This song is from their debut album together called “Sewn Back Together.”
- The project was recently long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize this year.
- Here’s what Daniel notes in a statement about the track: “I used to get into a lot of fights at school when I was younger. One of the schools was called “Happy Thought” which ironically was filled with racist rural farmer type folk. I think as a type of punishment my Mom sent me to live with my Dad on the Rez so he could show me how to be a “man”. Although my Dad was a very complex human he was very compassionate towards me, especially when I explained how the kids would tease me for being Ojibway. He’d always let me stay home with him and oftentimes we’d go to the Rez store for chips and pop; I’d get Cherry Coke. The lyrics and song title are inspired by these memories of my childhood and of my father.”
