A new fund has been created to support local initiatives with The County Foundation’s “The Button Fund.”

For Immediate Release [Prince Edward County] –The County Foundation is pleased to announce a new donor advised fund to benefit the community. The Button Fund is aimed at supporting causes to support youth and families, people struggling with homelessness or addictions and the arts. The fund will also collaborate with the Wellington on the Lake community to support community events and fundraisers.
The donor family are the Guziewicz, the family name is Polish, meaning ‘button maker’, hence the name, The Button Fund. “Giving back is important to our family, we know that in Prince Edward County there are many people struggling with rising costs and inflation and families that need a little extra help. By working with The County Foundation, we can create more impact with our giving.” explains donor Diana Guziewicz.
The first event of the fund, the Holiday Cheer Family Gathering is taking place on Sunday November 26th , at the Wellington on the Lake Recreation Centre from 2-4pm. The event is free and open for families to attend, donations are appreciated and will benefit Food for Learning in Prince Edward County. Food for Learning provides healthy snacks and food for students in a judgement free and accessible manner. All donations received will be matched by The Button Fund, with a goal of raising $10,000 for the program. “The need for nutritious meals and snacks in schools is increasing, last school year our program was accessed by an average of 548 Prince Edward County students per day. The significant rise in food costs is not only impacting families, but also schools. Though food at school is free for students, it still comes with a price for local schools. Some schools struggle to meet the demands of their grocery bills. We know that when students have access to something many of us take for granted, nutritious food, they are better equipped to learn. Funds raised from events like this go a long way in supporting the program.” Commented Vicky Struthers, Program Coordinator for the Food for Learning program.
The event is co-organized by the Wellington on the Lake Residents Association (WOLRA), bringing together over 50 volunteers to make the day special. “WOLRA is excited to take part in the event, not only is it a special day for families but donations benefit a crucial program ensuring students have nutritious snacks. Our community is comprised of generous, energetic and talented people, and so far, we have over 60 volunteers ready to support this event.” comments Derek Mendham, Director of Communications WOLRA. Activities include miniature horses in holiday attire, a cookie decorating contest judged by kids, arts, crafts, face painting and a balloon artist.
