The old saying “April showers bring May Flowers,” is definitely proving to be true this year!
As we get outside and embrace the warmer weather, many community groups are also gearing up for some outdoor events and activities. If you have finished College and university for the year, recently retired, or looking to reconnect with the Quinte region..then Volunteer Information Quinte is the place to start! They match volunteers with organizations all year round.
*The Quinte West Garden group is looking for some help at the community gardens. People are needed to help tend to the flower beds, harvest and deliver produce, as well as assist with special events including the plant sale and Doors Open Quinte West.
*The CNIB Foundation is looking for volunteers to work with clients who are blind or partially sighted. The one-to-one assistance program matches volunteers and clients based on their location and shared interests. Volunteers are needed to visit with clients a couple of hours a week and help them run errands, get out for walks, and socialize
*The Children’s Foundation needs people to collect donations at local McDonald’s restaurants for McHappy Day on May 8th. Donations collected at local drive-thrus will go towards programming and services. Volunteers can take shifts at the local restaurants for a few hours on event day.
*You don’t have to pay to attend Empire Rockfest this year in downtown Belleville. Volunteer Information Quinte can be your ticket in! VIQ is looking for lots of people to help work at Empire Rockfest on July 18th, 19th, and 20th. People are needed to scan tickets, check identification, and help provide directions! Smart Serve volunteers are needed at the bar area! Shifts vary from 4:30 pm to 11:30 pm.
*If you like to drive, then Community Care South Hastings needs you! They are looking for volunteer drivers to help clients get to and from medical appointments. Mileage is reimbursed. Orientation and training is provided. Community Care South Hastings also needed people to help with the Meals on Wheels program. Volunteers are needed weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can pick your own schedule, but you need a vehicle.
*Volunteer drivers are also needed to help out Community Care Prince Edward County Association, and Central Hastings Support Network.
*Work at a hospital is never done, and volunteers across the region provide essential support. Volunteers are needed at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital, and Belleville General Hospital. Volunteers assist patients and staff with directions, meal delivery, at the main desk, and making sure supplies continue to be well stocked. People are needed to help in the ER, mammography clinics, and day surgery areas. Orientation and training is provided.
*If you’re a home cook who’d like to put your skills to work… Catherine’s Kitchen needs helpers for its community lunch program. Volunteers assist in food preparation, serving, and clean-up. Shifts are from 8:45 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Catherine’s Kitchen is located at 24 Dundas Street West in Trenton.
*The Museums of Prince Edward County have some unique volunteer opportunities at five of its locations in the county: Front-desk receptions and hosts are needed at some of the museums. Several volunteers will get a chance to dress in period costumes and deliver programming. The museums in need of volunteers are Macaulay House, the Ameliasburgh Heritage Village, Wellington Heritage Museum, Mariner’s Park Museum, and the Rose House Museum.
Volunteer Information Quinte refers volunteers to more than 275 agencies throughout Hastings and Prince Edward counties.
