Belleville Downtown District has released the following statement this week.
Community Celebrates Unveiling of National Mural Project in Downtown Belleville
The Downtown Belleville BIA was proud to partner with the Quinte Arts Council on Tuesday, June 2, for the unveiling of a remarkable new mural mosaic at 9 Market Street in Downtown Belleville.
Held on a beautiful sunny day, the unveiling was an incredible community celebration featuring many of the locals who contributed tiles to the project, along with the original mural artists and community partners who helped bring the vision to life.
The mural is part of Canada Connects: Nature’s Canvas National Mural, a large-scale collaborative artwork designed by Canadian muralist Lewis Lavoie. The completed 12-by-24-foot mural is made up of 4,000 hand-painted tiles from communities across Canada, including 150 tiles painted by local participants from the Quinte region.
More than a public art installation, the mural represents the power of creativity to connect people and communities. Inspired by the idea that the roots of trees stretch beneath the landscape and connect places far beyond what we can see, the artwork serves as a visual reminder that communities across Canada are linked together through shared experiences, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Each tile reflects an individual contribution that has become part of a larger story celebrating nature, collaboration, and connection from coast to coast.
“Downtown Belleville is proud to celebrate creativity in the heart of our community, and this mural is a beautiful example of what can happen when people come together through art,” said Danielle Hanoman, Executive Director for the Downtown Belleville BIA. “To be part of a project that connects our community to a larger national movement is incredibly meaningful. This mural not only showcases local talent and participation, but also reminds us that we are all connected through creativity, collaboration, and a shared sense of place.”
The Downtown Belleville BIA congratulates the Quinte Arts Council on the successful completion of this inspiring project and encourages residents and visitors to stop by 9 Market Street beside Bourbon Street Pizza to experience this unique piece of public art firsthand. Take a moment to admire the incredible detail of the mural, snap a photo with this vibrant new downtown landmark, and share it on social media by tagging @QuinteArtsCouncil and @DowntownBelleville. As a lasting addition to Downtown Belleville’s public art collection, the mural offers a meaningful opportunity to celebrate local creativity while connecting to a national story.
The unveiling of the Nature’s Canvas mural is just the beginning. As the first in a series of mural and beautification projects planned for Downtown Belleville, this installation highlights the impact of community partnerships and creative placemaking. The Downtown Belleville BIA looks forward to sharing more exciting projects and collaborations in the months ahead, helping to make downtown an even more vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike.
