Roughly 150 people gathered at Belleville’s Market Square last night, to show support for the Jewish community.
The community-led vigil was in response of the shooting that took place near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Sunday night in the east-end of Belleville.
Police have identified the 29-year-old shooting suspect, as Sean Ward from Quinte West, along with the Belleville Police officer who was injured, Constable Jeff Smith.
The synagogue remains closed off as the police investigation continues.
Norm Weddum, the President of the Sons of Jacob Congregation told the crowd at Market Square last night, – quote – “This will not stop us. We will soon gather to worship again and conduct programs.”
Weddum also revealed that some members of the congregation held a private service at a hotel in Belleville.
Meanwhile, Members of the Toronto Jewish Community are behind a Go Fund Me Page for Constable Smith, which has over $20,000 raised.
